Fuel Your Determination
Excuses are like belly buttons - everyone has them. OK – I’m going to keep it real with you here - only you think your excuses are good enough. Sorry, not sorry to be the true friend to tell you that to your face.
Here’s a little story that has stuck with me whenever I look for excuses. One day I was supposed to go to the gym (yes I talk about this a lot b/c it is a BIG part of my health recovery, both physical & mental) and I did NOT want to go.
I started whining to my husband, running down my list of excuses for why I can’t go. I'm tired, I'm on my period oh and by the way - I broke my back a year ago! What are gonna say now, huh? I mean really – what kind of comeback are you going to have after that?
Finally, I decided that I would go and do a short workout because I knew it would make me feel better – and help me get to my long-term goal instead of giving in to short term laziness. I took along my bad mood and my list of excuses in my head and off to the gym I went.
As I was plugging away on the elliptical, feeling all proud of myself that I actually went to the gym. Telling myself in my head that I didn’t have to push myself as hard and I could slack off because at least I made it to the gym, plus I’m still tired plus ummmm broke my back and down the list I went in my brain.
Just then I looked over at a woman who was 3 machines away hauling butt on the elliptical. Dripping sweat with a look of complete focus and determination on her face – and I look down to find that she only had 1 leg.
I was amazed! I immediately thought - WOW - if this woman can do this with one leg how can I feel bad for myself? At the end of the day, everyone is going through something – and only you can validate your own excuses to yourself.
This woman didn't let it keep her down and give herself excuses for why she can’t She let that fuel her and give her determination for why she CAN and did.
The brain is a tricky thing that will give you every excuse to take the easy way out. To go back to your comfort zone and stay there. For why you can’t. For why tomorrow will be the day. For why the couch is a better place to be instead of growing and working towards your long-term goals.
“Stay in your head, you’re dead” – Tony Robbins
You see, our challenges and battles are given to us for a reason just like our dreams are. We NEED the challenges because the challenges make you the person you were meant to be to achieve your goal.
Not to give you an excuse for why you can’t achieve something.
But to teach you the things that you need to learn along the way and overcome the battle. To fuel your determination for why you must achieve your dream and show others that it is possible, despite all that you have been through.
Determination lives in your heart – not in your head.
Your warrior strong, battle tested heart.
Guess what else lives there – gratitude.
Look for a way to be grateful for your challenges and use them to fuel your determination to achieve the greatness that you were meant for.
