Kick Your Self-Sabotaging Ways to the Curb

Kick Your Self-Sabotaging Ways to the Curb

Do you ever find yourself all motivated and all gung ho about a goal/dream and then you start taking massive action towards it – WHOOP WHOOP.

Then a few weeks goes by and you start to slack off. You start going back to the easier way, back when you didn’t take care of the actions you knew were a major part of achieving that goal. Going back to watching Netflix & chilling over staying focused and motivated.

Why do we do this to ourselves? The biggest reason is a form of self-sabotage that is hiding in your brain. Do you ever find it curious how most of the lottery winners end up being broke again? Self-sabotage.

The actual definition of self-sabotage is when a behavior creates problems and interferes with long-standing goals.  Some of the most common self-sabotaging behaviors are procrastination, self-medicating with drugs or alcohol, comfort eating and forms of self-injury. *

People self-sabotage in many ways and unless the deep-rooted belief is changed – it will happen again and again. Have you ever lost a bunch of weight on a diet then only to gain it back – and sometimes more? This is a classic sign of self-sabotage. Until the deep-rooted belief that is the cause of the problem is changed, you will not create and have the lasting long-term change that you crave.

The biggest reason that a person goes into self-sabotage mode (as I call it – and have entered many a time) is that there is a deep-rooted belief that you don’t deserve whatever goal you have made for yourself or that you can’t have it. There could be more to it, like past perceived “failures” (I use that word loosely because nothing is a failure, just a learning lesson), self-esteem issues and of course #1 – FEAR.

So, you head for the cookie jar and scarf down as many cookies as you can before anyone sees you (speaking from experience). Or, you stop taking action and focusing on your mindset and take the easier way that leads right back to your comfort zone.

However, once self-sabotage is recognized and pulled up out of the dark for examination – you have the CHOICE to CHANGE it.

It doesn’t matter how long you let the self-sabotage run the show – you can make the choice right then and there to change it and go for your goal again. It is completely normal to have these feelings and to stop and start towards goals and/or dreams – so don’t freak out and beat yourself up. Always strive for progress, not perfection. So, if you recognized your self-sabotaging ways and took a different action today – that’s better than yesterday.

Once self-sabotage is recognized, look at the major underlying beliefs that you are carrying around with you. This belief must be changed for you to actually achieve your goal and maintain that lasting change in your life.

Ask yourself, if my goal or dream were true, what would I have to believe? What belief would I NEED for me to have the things that I want? The great thing is that you get to choose the beliefs that you have – the best way to change them is with action and practice.

Even on the days that the couch and the remote seem to be calling your name. Or that yummy Facebook recipe that looks oh so delicious (or whatever your self-sabotaging ways are). These are short term rewards that won’t get you to your long-term goal.

Choose the beliefs that help you obtain your goals and get you to where you want to go – and then choose them over and over again DAILY until it just becomes natural.

Practice believing in the warrior that you are, the warrior that lives inside of your heart, the warrior that can overcome ANYTHING and chase the dream that was given to you. So that you can bring it to life.

Remember…
Life is What You Choose
