3 Real Life Tools to Help Shift Your Mindset About Getting Healthy

Most of us have some form of New Years Resolution every year to get healthy and lose weight. However, facing the fact that we are now more than halfway through the year - again, most of us are not anywhere near that goal.

I know that I’m not for sure. After losing a ton of weight before and then letting my mindset slip (and subsequently everything else) I know how easy it can be to get off track. The biggest thing that is crucial when you’re trying to focus on getting your health, eating and weight on track is….. you guessed it MINDSET!

Mindset is so important when you are trying to focus on any goal. But if this is the most important component to actually having and maintaining success, why is it so easy to let it slip? If you really start to think about it, EVERYTHING in society nowadays has you set up for failure. It is set up to invade your mind and take over.

Think about it. There is food porn everywhere, skinny Instagram models that can make you feel like you’re not good enough, food celebrations (yup… 4th of July is coming up too), temptations at the grocery story checkout, etc. This can make getting healthy feel like an uphill battle and to be VERY honest and real, for a food addict, every day is a battle. There are no rainbows and butterflies at the end of your weight loss journey where you are “done”. I have to fight this battle daily - some days are better than others and the good days are when I make sure to get my mindset in check.

So, let me give you 3 real life tools to help you get that warrior mindset locked, loaded and ready to battle the day.

  1. Journal
Yup. You had to know that this was going to be my #1 real life tool. No this doesn’t mean journal all your woes for an hour and cry into the pages until the ink smears (been there). Take 5-10 minutes in the morning to journal and set your intentions for the day. This gets you thinking about those goals first thing in the morning. This is such an amazingly powerful tool that, when used properly, can set the tone for your day. It will help you regain focus on your goals daily, create gratitude (which is a major attitude adjustment even if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed) and help you gain confidence.
If you need help getting started, I have a free journaling workshop you can find here -> JOURNALING 101: HOW TO START JOURNALING IN REAL LIFE.

2. Focus on the small chunks

When I started journaling - I got all gungho and wrote down all my big health goals. At the time they were to lose 80+ pounds, go whole food plant based 100% of the time and finally have the body I had always wanted. Needless to say, I got overwhelmed very quickly. It can be very easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed to look at those huge goals and end up throwing your hands up feeling like these goals are never going to happen (and then go eat a whole sleeve of girl scout cookies in the bathroom - or is that just me lol).

Don’t get me wrong - having those big goals are great. They give you the beginning of the road map of where you want to be and what you want to do. However, try focusing on the small chunks that make up that goal instead. A great example would be to focus on just 10 pounds at a time, making booty gains or switching your family’s eating lifestyle. By focusing on the little chunks that make up your big goal, you can work on gaining the momentum you need to actually achieve the big goal. By hitting each little goal, you gain the confidence and feeling of accomplishment instead of always feeling like you are always going to be so far away from actually achieving the big goal.

3. Change your story to “I get to” instead of “I have to”

This is a big one that my hubby and I talk about a lot. The story that you continue to tell yourself is what you are drilling into your subconscious and your mindset. I still remind myself that when I go to the gym, instead of saying “I have to go workout” - “I get to workout”. That gets me into an attitude of gratitude for actually being able to workout and move my body, something that can be easy to take for granted. I get to eat healthy. I get to feed my body the nutrition that it needs to sustain me. I get to go to the gym and am thankful I can afford it. When we change the story to “I get to” - we can change not only our point of view, but our attitude towards doing the things that we know are going to move us towards achieving our goals.

To quote Mel Robbins “motivation is garbage”! You’re never going to feel like doing it. Focus instead on building momentum by taking those small steps at a time that move you towards your goals.

Let me know what some of your small chunks are that will move you towards those big health goals?
